NEW EU BIO REGULATION NO. 2018/848

On January 1 (2022), the new EU Bio (organic) regulation No. 2018/848 will enter into force. This regulation replaces regulation No. 834/2007 and No. 889/2008.

Organic production, labelling and controls have been regulated at EU level since 1991. Previously, the EU requirements for organic production are set by Regulation (EC) No 834/2007 defining the aims, objectives and principles of organics. Also regulation No 889/2008 details organic production, labelling, control and import rules. All products labelled as organic and sold in the EU must be produced under these regulations.

A new Bio Regulation promising the harmonization of rules will provide a better clarification of organic production to all operators. A new single set of rules applicable to all farmers in and outside the EU replacing the many current different standards will ensure a fair play for all farmers and operators and that all organic food marketed in the EU is of the same, high quality. The new Regulation was already adopted in 2018 and was initially supposed to enter into force on January 1, 2021. But in connection with the corona pandemic, it was decided last year for the time being to postpone the entry into force of the new Regulation by one year.

Given the tremendous growth of organic production, the European Commission believes that the simpler and more harmonized approach of the new Regulation would allow the sector to grow even faster.

Benefert will work according to the new Bio Regulation EU 2018/848 from the 1st of January 2022.
